Rampaging Masquerade Arrested After Violent Outburst at Awgbu Festival

The Anambra State Police Command has arrested a masquerade that went on a violent rampage in Awgbu, Orumba North Local Government Area, injuring residents and causing chaos during a weekend festival.

According to reports, the incident occurred during the Ofala Festival held in honour of the late traditional ruler of Awgbu, Igwe M. C. Okechukwu (Ezedioramma II, Ezekanunu III).

Eyewitnesses and social media footage, Global Mirror News gathered, showed the masquerade chasing people, attacking passersby, toppling motorcycles, and destroying public address equipment, creating widespread panic.

In one shocking scene, an elderly man riding a motorcycle was knocked down, hitting his head on a parked vehicle.

Supporters of the masquerade reportedly threw chairs, tables, and sachet water at festival attendees, escalating the violence, Global Mirror News gathered.

SP Tochukwu Ikenga, the Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the arrest and described the masquerade’s actions as “totally unacceptable and unlawful.” He noted that investigations are ongoing to ensure all those involved are brought to justice.

This violent display has reignited concerns over unlawful masquerade activities in Anambra State. In February 2025, a masquerade known as “Nweke” was declared wanted after allegedly killing a 71-year-old man.

Authorities continue to stress that cultural displays must be restricted to designated areas to safeguard public peace, Global Mirror News gathered.
