Ramadan: Kano Targets 3.5m Residents in Massive Free Meal Programme

The Kano State Government has commenced a large-scale Ramadan feeding initiative aimed at providing free meals to more than 3.5 million residents during the Holy Month, as part of efforts to support vulnerable households and ease economic pressure on citizens.

Global Mirror News gathered that the programme involves the daily preparation and distribution of thousands of meal packages across major metropolitan Areas of the State throughout the fasting period.

Officials overseeing the initiative disclosed that the programme is structured to produce about 115,000 meal packs daily during the 29 days of Ramadan, with food distributed across eight metropolitan Local Government Areas in Kano.

The Commissioner for Religious Affairs and Chairman of the Ramadan Feeding Committee, Ahmed Tijjani, said the Government had intensified inspections of cooking centres responsible for preparing the meals to ensure strict compliance with hygiene and quality standards.

According to him, the inspection exercise focuses on food preparation environments, ingredient quality and packaging processes to guarantee that meals supplied to residents meet approved health standards.

The committee also noted that several contractors have been engaged to prepare large quantities of food daily, with some centres producing meals for up to 25,000 beneficiaries per day, while others handle between 13,000 and 25,000 meals daily.

Government officials further stated that continuous monitoring has helped address earlier complaints regarding food quality and has reduced attempts by individuals to divert supplies meant for designated distribution points.

The initiative is part of the State Hovernment’s broader welfare intervention during Ramadan, aimed at supporting fasting residents while ensuring food safety and equitable distribution across communities.

Authorities say supervision will continue throughout the programme to maintain quality control and ensure the meals reach intended beneficiaries.
