Political Parties Plan Nationwide Rally to Back Nigeria’s New Tax Regime

Political parties across Nigeria, operating under the umbrella of the Forum of National Chairmen of Political Parties (NCPP), have announced plans to stage a Nationwide rally on January 10, 2026, in support of the Federal Government’s newly introduced tax regime, Global Mirror News reports.
The decision followed an extensive consultative meeting of party leaders, led by the National chairman of the Action Peoples Party (APP), Barrister Uchenna Nnadi.
The parties described the tax reforms as a far-reaching economic policy that transcends partisan politics and is aimed at addressing Nigeria’s long-standing fiscal challenges.
Speaking after the meeting, NCPP leaders stressed that the new tax regime should not be subjected to partisan contestation, noting that the country’s economic realities require unity of purpose, collective sacrifice and responsible leadership across political divides.
They said the reforms introduced by the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu represent a National economic necessity rather than the Agenda of any single political party.
According to the forum, the tax reforms are designed to broaden Nigeria’s revenue base, reduce overdependence on domestic and external borrowing, strengthen fiscal discipline and enhance the capacity of Governments at the Federal, State and Local levels to deliver critical infrastructure, social services and economic opportunities to citizens.
The parties maintained that the long-term benefits of the reforms would be felt across generations if properly implemented.
The NCPP explained that the planned January 10 rally would serve as a peaceful, inclusive and non-partisan platform to mobilise public support for the reforms and educate Nigerians on their long-term economic benefits.
The rally, they said, would also demonstrate a united political commitment to policies that prioritise National development over narrow political interests.
While acknowledging that tax reforms can be challenging for citizens in the short term, the political leaders emphasised the importance of informed dialogue and National unity.
They said constructive engagement with the public remains the most effective way to navigate the transition and ensure broad acceptance of the policy.
The parties also distanced themselves from allegations of plots by anti-democratic elements seeking to exploit the tax reforms for political incitement, orchestrated protests or the spread of misinformation.
They warned that any attempt to weaponise the reforms for political instability would pose a direct threat to democratic governance and national cohesion.
The forum called on Nigerians, particularly youths, labour unions, civil society organisations, market Associations and the organised private sector, to approach the reforms with patience, patriotism and a long-term perspective on national prosperity.
They further urged Government Agencies responsible for implementing the tax regime to ensure transparency, fairness and sensitivity, stressing that public trust is central to the success of any economic reform.
Reaffirming their collective commitment to democracy, peace and economic stability, the political leaders said Nigeria’s future depends on the ability of all stakeholders to rise above partisan divisions and act in the national interest, adding that the new tax regime represents a critical moment that must not be undermined by political considerations.
