Police Officer, Civilian Die in Container-Tricycle Collision

Tragedy struck in Lagos on Tuesday when a 40-foot container truck with registration number is XP 368 AKD overturned and crushed a commercial tricycle, killing two people, including a serving Police Officer.
The fatal accident occurred around Ijora Causeway, inward Ijora 7Up, in Apapa area of Lagos, causing panic and heavy traffic gridlock along the busy route.
Confirming the incident in a statement, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) said its officials, alongside other emergency responders, swiftly moved to the scene to rescue victims and evacuate the wreckage.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the truck, laden with goods, lost control while in motion.
It rammed into the tricycle from behind before toppling, leaving the passengers trapped underneath.
Sadly, two occupants — the police officer and one unidentified civilian — were crushed to death instantly.
Eyewitnesses recounted the chaotic moments, describing how passersby and motorists rushed to assist before emergency agencies arrived. A witness, identified as Tunde, said:
“The truck was speeding and suddenly tilted to one side. Before anyone could react, the container fell directly on the keke (tricycle). We couldn’t save the passengers.”
Officials of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the Nigeria Police, and other security operatives were also on ground to maintain order and ensure the bodies were recovered.
The corpses of the victims were later deposited at a Government morgue.
Meanwhile, the driver of the truck reportedly fled the scene immediately after the crash, sparking outrage among residents who decried the frequency of fatal container-related accidents in Lagos.
The incident added to growing calls for stricter regulation of container trucks and improved safety measures on Lagos roads.
