Police Nab Suspect Over Shooting of Officers at Ondo Checkpoint

The Ondo State Police Command has arrested a man identified as Nwabali in connection with an attack on Police Officers at a checkpoint in Ipele, Owo Local Government Area of the State.

The arrest followed a shooting incident on December 17, 2025, in which two Police Officers and a female bystander sustained gunshot injuries.

The suspect was reportedly part of a three-man gang that carried out the attack.
In a statement issued on Saturday, the Police Public Relations Officer, Abayomi Jimoh, said the incident occurred at about 8:00 p.m. at Ipele Junction while operatives of the Safer Highway Patrol were performing routine duties.

According to the Police, three armed men riding on a motorcycle approached the checkpoint and opened fire on the Officers without provocation. The Officers were forced to respond in self-defence, leading to a brief exchange.

“As a result of the attack, two Police Officers were injured, while a female bystander, later identified as Taiwo, also sustained injuries,” the statement said.

All the injured victims were immediately taken to a hospital, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.

The Police said one of the suspects, Nwabali, was arrested at the scene, while the motorcycle used by the attackers was recovered. The other two suspects fled and are currently being tracked by security operatives.

Jimoh disclosed that the arrested suspect is in custody and has provided information that is assisting ongoing efforts to apprehend the remaining members of the gang. He added that the suspect would be charged to court after investigations are concluded.

The Police Spokesperson noted that the incident highlights the impact of ongoing policing reforms and improved operational strategies introduced under the leadership of the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
