The Edo State Police Command has launched an investigation into a viral video showing a disturbing bullying incident involving students of Igbinedion Secondary School, with authorities warning that those responsible may face arrest and prosecution.
Global Mirror News gathered that the police stepped into the matter after the video, which circulated widely on social media, showed a student being physically assaulted by peers within the school premises.
In a statement issued on Saturday by the Police Public Relations Officer, Eno Ikoedem, the command confirmed that the Commissioner of Police in the State, Monday Agbonika, had ordered an immediate probe into the incident.
According to the statement, the Commissioner directed the Divisional Police Officer in charge of the area to visit the school and commence a detailed investigation to establish the circumstances surrounding the bullying episode.
The Police disclosed that the outcome of the inquiry could lead to the arrest and prosecution of the students involved.
Meanwhile, the management of Igbinedion Montessori Nursery/Primary School and Igbinedion Junior/Senior Secondary School confirmed that disciplinary action had already been taken against the perpetrators.
In a statement signed by Acting Principal Ann Apeh and other Senior Officials of the institution, the school said it was aware of the disturbing video and had conducted an internal investigation immediately after the incident came to light.
The management described the behaviour displayed in the footage as a serious violation of the school’s code of conduct and core values.
According to the statement, the institution maintains a strict zero-tolerance policy against bullying, intimidation, harassment, cultism and all forms of violence among students.
Following its internal probe, the school said the students responsible for the assault had been expelled with immediate effect.
The management added that the safety, dignity and wellbeing of students remain a top priority, noting that support was being provided to those affected while the school works closely with their families.
It also confirmed that the incident had been reported to relevant authorities and pledged full cooperation with the ongoing police investigation.
