Police Arrest Masquerader for Causing Public Disturbance in Akwa Ibom
The Akwa Ibom State Police Command has detained a man identified as David Effiong for allegedly causing a public disturbance while dressed in full masquerade regalia, despite an existing state-wide ban on such displays.
Effiong was arrested on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, after residents alerted authorities that a masquerade was creating a nuisance in their neighbourhood and allegedly destroying property. Video clips circulating online show the individual in elaborate masquerade attire before Police Officers moved in to arrest him.
Confirming the development, the Commissioner of Police, CP Baba Azare, said Effiong is currently in custody and will be charged to court as soon as the investigation is completed. He noted that the suspect’s actions directly violated the directive issued by the State Government.
The incident comes as Security Agencies intensify enforcement of Governor Umo Eno’s ban on masquerade activities across the State, a measure introduced in response to growing concerns over incidents of intimidation, violence, and damage to property linked to masqueraders in various communities.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to maintaining law and order, warning that anyone flouting the ban will face appropriate sanctions.
