Outrage as Police Summon Officer, DPO Over Viral Extortion Video

The Nigeria Police Force has ordered a Police Officer caught in a viral video allegedly extorting a commercial motorcyclist to report to the Force Headquarters in Abuja, as public anger mounts over recurring cases of Police misconduct.

Global Mirror News gathered that the Officer’s Divisional Police Officer (DPO) has also been summoned and may face disciplinary action for failing in supervisory responsibility.

The incident, which reportedly occurred in Cross River State, was captured on video and circulated widely on social media on Sunday.

The footage shows a uniformed Police Officer stopping a motorcyclist by the roadside and demanding cash.

The Officer is seen counting the money while the motorcyclist appears hesitant and uncomfortable, a scene that triggered widespread condemnation online.

Confirming the development, the Police Complaint Response Unit (PCRU) announced in a statement posted on its official X handle that the video had been authenticated and that the Police high command had taken swift action.

“The Force high command has sent for the DPO and Officer seen in this viral video to report to the Police Force Headquarters, Abuja, for disciplinary actions accordingly.

#NoToImpunity,” the statement read.

Global Mirror News reports that the case has once again drawn attention to persistent allegations of extortion and abuse of power by some Police Officers, particularly against vulnerable road users such as motorcyclists and commercial drivers.

The Police leadership reiterated its commitment to professionalism and accountability, assuring Nigerians that officers found culpable would be sanctioned in line with established rules and regulations.
