OGWAMA Opens Two-Day Industrial Waste Management Workshop, Tasks Stakeholders on Compliance, Innovation

The Ogun State Government on Wednesday flagged off a two-day workshop on Industrial Waste Management in Abeokuta, with a renewed call for stronger collaboration, stricter compliance, and innovative solutions to environmental challenges confronting the State.

Representing the Governor of Ogun State, His Excellency Prince Dapo Abiodun, CON, the Commissioner for Environment, Dr. Ola Oresanya, delivered the keynote address at the opening ceremony held at the Marque Hall, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Oke-Mosan.

In his address, Oresanya reaffirmed the Governor’s unwavering commitment to building “a cleaner, safer, and more industrious ecosystem,” emphasizing that the Abiodun-led administration has continued to prioritize environmental reforms, strengthened enforcement mechanisms, and embraced global best practices.

He detailed the State Ministry of Environment’s policies, strategies, and work plans geared toward safeguarding public health, improving industrial compliance, and driving sustainability across communities and production sectors.

Oresanya stressed that industrial waste management remains a crucial pillar in the State’s environmental Agenda, adding that the Hovernment’s objective is to align economic expansion with responsible environmental stewardship.

Following the keynote address, the Special Adviser to the Governor and Chief Executive Officer of the Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA), Hon. Abayomi Semako Hunye, formally declared the workshop open.

Hunye described the two-day programme as one of OGWAMA’s strategic interventions designed to address persistent gaps between environmental policy formulation and real-world application.

According to him, the workshop seeks to “fortify unity and bring in more ideas to strengthen the waste management ecosystem while forging a new era in industrial waste management.”

He explained that the event brings together three key stakeholder groups, Industry Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Officers, recyclable waste vendors, and Private Sector Participants (PSPs) — in a bid to enhance cooperation and establish a more transparent, coordinated system of industrial waste governance.

Unveiling the theme of the workshop, “Synergy, Standards, and Solutions: Forging a New Era of Industrial Waste Management in Ogun State,” Hunye stated that the focus is shifting away from reactionary approaches to more collaborative, solution-driven frameworks rooted in innovation, clear regulatory guidance, and sustainable models.

He outlined the workshop’s objectives, which include:
Enhancing regulatory compliance through a comprehensive overview of environmental laws and OGWAMA enforcement mandates;

Promoting waste-to-wealth opportunities such as waste-to-energy (WtE) technologies and advanced recycling models through case studies;

Strengthening inter-stakeholder collaboration by establishing a formal forum for industries, vendors, OGWAMA officials, and private waste managers to jointly address challenges.

The Chairman of the Planning Committee, Mr. Ajani Egbemuyiwa, also highlighted the importance of getting industrial waste management right, noting that it is essential not just for compliance but for the long-term health of residents and the sustainability of the State’s industrial environment.

The workshop, scheduled for Wednesday 19th and Thursday 20th November 2025, continues with technical sessions, policy discussions, and expert-led dialogues expected to produce actionable recommendations for transforming waste management practices across Ogun State.
