OGWAMA Holds Workshop on Industrial Waste Management, Tackles Policy-Implementation Gaps

The Ogun State Waste Management Agency (OGWAMA) is set to host a two-day workshop aimed at bridging the widening gap between policy formulation and practical implementation of industrial waste management in Ogun State.

The initiative aligns with the environmental vision of Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, who has repeatedly emphasized modern, sustainable approaches to waste management across the State.

Hon. Abayomi Semako Hunye, Special Adviser/CEO of OGWAMA, said the workshop is a strategic intervention designed to bring together three core stakeholder groups: Industry Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) Officers, recyclable waste vendors, and Private Waste Managers (PSPs).

“This initiative is aimed at addressing the significant gaps between policy and practice. The workshop will serve as a critical platform to enhance cooperation, clarify regulatory expectations, and equip participants with the knowledge and tools necessary to transition toward more sustainable and profitable waste management practices,” Hunye said.

The theme of the workshop, “Synergy, Standards, and Solutions: Forging a New Era of Industrial Waste Management in Ogun State,” reflects a shift from crisis-oriented responses to proactive, collaborative governance, clear regulatory frameworks, and practical, innovative solutions.

The two-day event is scheduled for Wednesday, 19th November, and Thursday, 20th November, 2025, at the Marque Hall, Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library, Oke Mosan, Abeokuta.

A press release by OGWAMA detailed the objectives of the workshop as follows:

Enhance Regulatory Compliance: Provide a comprehensive overview of existing environmental laws and OGWAMA’s enforcement mandates, ensuring industries understand and adhere to proper waste management standards.

Promote Innovative Waste-to-Wealth Models: Showcase advanced recycling technologies and waste-to-energy (WtE) initiatives through successful case studies, encouraging profitable and sustainable practices.

Strengthen Inter-Stakeholder Collaboration: Establish a transparent forum where OGWAMA, industry representatives, vendors, and private managers can build synergies, share insights, and collectively solve industrial waste challenges.

Hunye emphasized that the workshop represents a strategic step in moving Ogun State beyond reactive waste management, offering participants practical knowledge to navigate regulatory frameworks and adopt sustainable industrial waste practices.

OGWAMA called on all relevant stakeholders to participate actively, stressing that collaboration and innovation are central to creating a cleaner, more environmentally responsible Ogun State.
