Ogun Waste Management Authority Begins Special Clearance Operation

The Ogun State Waste Management Authority (OGWAMA) has commenced a statewide special clearance operation aimed at evacuating accumulated waste and restoring environmental sanitation across major urban centres.

The newly appointed Special Adviser to the Governor and Managing Director of OGWAMA, Farouk Akintunde, said the intervention became imperative to address the backlog of refuse that had not been adequately cleared prior to his assumption of office.

According to him, all operational machinery and personnel of the authority have been fully deployed to strategic locations across the state. He disclosed that the exercise is being carried out simultaneously in key towns including Abeokuta, Sango-Ota, Ijebu-Ode and Ifo, among others.

Akintunde further announced the immediate resumption of the authority’s “Night Operation,” which had been suspended for several months, noting that the nocturnal evacuation exercise is now fully operational to accelerate waste removal.

He added that following a strategic meeting with the executive and members of the Association of Waste Managers of Nigeria (AWAN), lingering operational challenges were resolved. As a result, registered waste managers have resumed activities in their designated coverage areas to support the ongoing clearance effort.

The Managing Director appealed to residents to cooperate with assigned waste managers by properly containerising refuse in front of their homes for collection, rather than dumping waste indiscriminately on roadsides and medians. He warned that defaulters would face prosecution in accordance with environmental sanitation laws.
