Ogun Unveils World-Class 250-Bed Hospital, Targets December Commissioning

The Ogun State Government has announced that the long-awaited Ogun State Medical Centre of Excellence, a 250-bed ultra-modern hospital located in Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta, will be commissioned in December 2025, marking a major milestone in the Administration’s drive to transform healthcare delivery in the state.

Governor Dapo Abiodun made this known during his inspection of the facility, which was initiated but left uncompleted by the immediate past Administration. The Governor expressed satisfaction with the quality and pace of ongoing work, assuring residents that the hospital would soon open its doors to the public.

According to Abiodun, the hospital, designed to provide cutting-edge healthcare services will be managed by the Abuja Medical Center of Excellence, which has King’s College Hospital, London, as one of its key International partners. The facility, he explained, will serve as a “spoke” for the Abuja Medical Center of Excellence and function as a first-choice medical destination for residents and neighbouring States.

“We are looking forward to the completion of this project. You can see the exterior is looking very nice; we’ve started landscaping, built an entrance canopy and the main gate, and the oxygen equipment is already functional. I have directed the contractors to double their manpower so we can commence operations in the next two to three weeks,” the Governor said.

He revealed that the hospital project had been riddled with several technical lapses when his administration took over, noting that his team had to correct numerous civil, structural, and electrical engineering deficiencies to bring the facility to standard.

“This facility was left with a lot of civil engineering gaps, a lot of structural and electrical issues—almost nil electrical engineering when we took over. But we’ve worked to correct all of that,” Abiodun explained.

Governor Abiodun added that upon completion, the Medical Centre of Excellence will drastically reduce medical tourism and prevent residents from travelling long distances for specialized medical attention.

“We know how much Nigerians spend on medical tourism every year. Many times, patients from Ogun are rushed to Lagos, Babcock, or Olabisi Onabanjo Teaching Hospital, and when cases get beyond them, they end up in Lagos. Once this hospital is operational, all that will stop,” he said.

He further highlighted the hospital’s strategic location, noting that its proximity to neighbouring states would make it a preferred destination for patients across the Southwest.

“Imagine the number of patients coming from the hinterlands—Oyo, Osun, and Ekiti—who must pass through Ogun before getting to Lagos. This will be a more convenient location for them,” the governor noted.

To ensure effective management, Governor Abiodun said the State explored a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model, which led to the engagement of Healthshare Services Limited, a reputable healthcare solutions firm.

“We decided that the best way to run this hospital efficiently was to partner with professionals who can manage it to International standards. Through our PPP office, we identified Healthshare Services Limited and signed a memorandum of understanding with them last year to complete and operate this facility,” he explained.

The Governor emphasized that the hospital’s commissioning would serve as one of the Administration’s major Christmas gifts to the people of Ogun State.

“By the grace of God, we intend to commission this project sometime in December. This will be one of our Christmas presents to Ogun State,” he said.

In his remarks, Dr. Frank Etang, Project Manager of Healthshare Integrated Solutions, confirmed that the team was on track to meet the December deadline. He explained that significant progress had been made in the installation and furnishing of critical areas of the hospital.

“We are presently rounding up work on the first floor, which houses the theater, ICU, and wards. The basement, ground floor, radiology, laboratory, doctors’ and nurses’ consulting rooms are already completed. We are confident we will meet the December commissioning target,” he assured.

The Ogun State Medical Centre of Excellence is designed to provide specialized care in cardiology, orthopedics, obstetrics, pediatrics, and other major fields of medicine. It will also serve as a referral point for hospitals within the state and the region, helping to strengthen the healthcare system and retain medical expertise within Nigeria.

With its state-of-the-art facilities and International partnership structure, the hospital is projected to position Ogun State as a regional hub for advanced medical care and innovation, curbing capital flight and improving health outcomes for millions.
