Governor Abiodun sets sights on economic transformation, major airports, dry ports, and education in “Budget of Sustainable Legacy”

The Ogun State Government has unveiled a record-breaking ₦1.668 trillion budget for 2026, marking a 63 percent increase over the 2025 fiscal plan. Governor Dapo Abiodun, presenting the Appropriation Bill tagged “Budget of Sustainable Legacy”, emphasized that the plan is geared toward economic transformation, infrastructure expansion, and job creation.

The proposed budget allocates ₦624.76 billion (37%) to recurrent expenditures and a staggering ₦1.044 trillion (63%) to capital projects. Key recurrent costs include personnel salaries (₦167.92 billion), consolidated revenue charges (₦65.80 billion), public debt servicing (₦99.98 billion), and overheads (₦291.06 billion).

Funding for the ambitious plan is expected to come from multiple sources: ₦509.88 billion from Internally Generated Revenue (IGR), ₦554.81 billion from Federal Allocations, and ₦518.90 billion through capital receipts, including internal and external loans and grants. Governor Abiodun highlighted that IGR alone has surged from ₦52 billion in 2020 to nearly ₦192 billion in 2024, projecting ₦250 billion in 2025.

Sectoral priorities reflect a focus on human capital and strategic infrastructure. Education is allocated ₦275.40 billion, Health ₦210.59 billion, and Housing and Community Development ₦199.96 billion. Infrastructure commands the largest share at ₦526.15 billion, signaling Ogun’s intent to consolidate its role as a logistics and investment hub. Other allocations cover social protection, recreation, public service, safety, judiciary, legislature, and statewide expenditures.

Governor Abiodun stressed that the 2026 budget will prioritize projects with revenue-generating potential, employment opportunities, and alignment with State and National development plans, including the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda. Highlighting the State’s economic resurgence, he reported an estimated GDP of ₦17 trillion and noted ongoing major projects such as the fully operational Gateway International Airport and the construction of Kajola and Ijebu-Ode Inland Dry Ports, set to boost exports, agro-processing, and industrial growth.

He also reiterated the administration’s focus on inclusive growth, social interventions, and infrastructure-led development, including over 1,500 km of roads constructed or rehabilitated over six years.

Governor Abiodun noted that the 2026 budget would continue to support the ISEYA development pillars, focusing on initiatives that stimulate employment, investment, and sustainable development.

Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Oludaisi Elemide, welcomed the presentation, highlighting the Assembly’s active oversight role. He praised the Governor for prompt constituency allowances and called for additional legislative resources, including staff and electronic office equipment, to further enhance efficiency. The Speaker also emphasized the Assembly’s efforts in settling land disputes and enforcing environmental and anti-land grabbing laws.

Governor Abiodun urged lawmakers to expedite the passage of the budget, while previewing upcoming major events, including the Gateway Afrobeat Drum Festival and Ogun State’s 50th Anniversary celebrations in 2026.
