Ogun NUJ Chairman Wale Olanrewaju Honours 50 Elderly on Golden Jubilee

In a remarkable demonstration of compassion and service, the Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ogun State Council, Comrade Akinwale Olanrewaju, marked his 50th birthday by empowering 50 elderly men and women from across the State.

The gesture, described by Olanrewaju as both a personal thanksgiving and a call to collective humanity, symbolized his commitment to honoring the wisdom and sacrifices of the aged.

Speaking at the event, Olanrewaju said: “Our elders represent wisdom, sacrifice, and resilience. Many labored quietly to build families, communities, and institutions from which we benefit today. It is both a duty and an honor to recognize and support them, not just with words, but with tangible acts of compassion.”

Fondly remembering his late parents, Olanrewaju described the initiative as a way of honoring their legacy, while symbolically adopting the 50 beneficiaries as his fathers and mothers. “Your prayers will be constant in my life, and I will never take your presence for granted,” he said, earning warm applause from attendees.

The NUJ Secretary, Comrade Bunmi Adigun, noted that the celebration was designed to extend beyond personal merriment, highlighting that Olanrewaju “chose to give back meaningfully to society at a time many would focus solely on personal celebration.”

He commended the chairman’s leadership, describing him as “a man whose golden jubilee reflects golden values of kindness, empathy, and responsibility.”

Other dignitaries, including NUJ National Officer Comrade James Sowole, and colleagues Comrades Abiodun Taiwo and Kemi Orunsolu, praised Olanrewaju as a bridge-builder whose life at 50 has been defined by service. Vice Chairman Abiodun Lawal applauded the focus on the aged, noting that it “sets a standard worthy of emulation.”

The emotional highlight came when the Chairman’s wife, Mrs. Olanrewaju, eulogized her husband as “a compassionate man who finds joy not in what he gets, but in what he gives,” praying for continued strength and wisdom in his next phase of life.

The event featured the distribution of essential food packs, including rice, beans, garri, noodles, and other cooking ingredients, carefully selected to sustain the beneficiaries for a reasonable period. Reacting on behalf of the recipients, Mrs. Adijatu Ayelabola expressed heartfelt appreciation, stressing that emulating such acts could make the world a better place.
