Ogun LG Commission Trains Senior Officers on Leadership

The Ogun State Local Government Service Commission has intensified its drive to strengthen grassroots governance by organizing an intensive one-day training programme for Senior Officers across all Local Government Areas of the State.
The training, held on Thursday, September 18, 2025, at Crescent Muslim Professionals’ Hall, Leme, Abeokuta, focused on Strategic Leadership, Financial Management, and Administrative competence—Areas considered vital for effective public service delivery.
Focus on Leadership and Accountability
In her keynote address, the Chairman of the Commission, Ms. Olivia Olubukunola Onabanjo, stressed that Senior Officers play a crucial role in shaping the image and effectiveness of the Local Government system.
“As Senior Officers, you are expected to build an enduring service with integrity, professionalism, discipline and passion for excellence. You are to be role models to officers in the Service. You are the mirror of the Service to your subordinates and the general public,” she said.
She added that the training was part of the State Government’s broader vision to drive grassroots development and improve citizens’ access to quality governance.
The training featured two main paper presentations. The first, “Leave Management”, delivered by Mr. Babatunde Adebola Owolabi, Director of Management Services, focused on annual, sick, maternity, casual, leave of absence, and study leave.
He emphasized that proper leave administration not only protects staff rights but also enhances productivity and workplace harmony.
The second session, “Financial Management in the Local Government Service”, was presented by Alhaji Wasiu Babatunde Junaid, FCA, ACTI.
He highlighted the importance of accountability, revenue generation, and prudent resource allocation, urging officers to strictly adhere to financial regulations as a way of promoting grassroots development.

The Commission’s Permanent Secretary, Engr. Olanike Ogunbona, FNSE, praised the initiative, describing it as a continuation of an earlier training held exclusively for top management.
“This wider engagement provides a platform for more senior officers to sharpen their skills and reposition themselves for effective service delivery. It is an avenue to strengthen administrative efficiency across all Local Governments,” she said.

Participants also expressed appreciation for the training. In a vote of thanks, Mr. Fatai Ogundele, Head of Local Government Administration, Ifo LGA, said the officers would put the new knowledge to practical use.
“We are grateful for this opportunity. The insights gained on leadership and financial management will guide us in improving service delivery at the grassroots,” Ogundele assured.
The Commission reaffirmed its commitment to periodic training and retraining of staff as part of its long-term human capacity development strategy, which it says is central to achieving efficiency and accountability within the Local Government system.
