Ogun CP Ogunlowo Urges Calm as NUJ Prepares for Crucial Council Election

As the Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) intensifies preparations for its much-anticipated Council election, the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, CP ‘Lanre Ogunlowo, PhD, has called for total peace and decorum among all stakeholders ahead of the poll.

CP Ogunlowo made the appeal when the 2025 Credentials and Screening Committee of the Ogun NUJ paid a courtesy and briefing visit to the Police Command in Eleweran, Abeokuta. He reaffirmed the long-standing cordial relationship between the Nigeria Police Force and the Media Community in the State, noting that the Command remains committed to supporting Journalists in carrying out their duties without fear.

The Commissioner stressed that the Police have no expectation of disorder but remain fully prepared to provide security before, during, and after the election. According to him, all security arrangements have been activated, and Officers will be deployed across the venue to ensure a smooth and credible exercise.

While acknowledging concerns about tensions and past incidents associated with Union elections in the State, CP Ogunlowo issued a firm warning that any act capable of breaching peace would attract swift and decisive action. He emphasized that the Command would not tolerate violence, intimidation, or any activity that could undermine the election.

He wished all contestants success and appealed for maturity, professionalism, and respect for union guidelines throughout the process. “We will be on ground to protect lives, property, and the integrity of the election. We expect everyone to conduct themselves responsibly,” he said.

Earlier, Chairman of the 2025 Credentials and Screening Committee, Comrade Abiodun Taiwo, expressed gratitude to the police leadership for the sustained cooperation between the NUJ and the Police Command. He explained that the visit was part of the committee’s official preparation for the forthcoming election aimed at ensuring transparency and adequate security coverage.
