Ogun @50: Abiodun Opens MKO Abiola Stadium to Fans for Falconets’ World Cup Qualifier

As part of activities marking the 50th anniversary of Ogun State, Governor Dapo Abiodun has thrown open the gates of the MKO Abiola Sports Arena, Kuto, Abeokuta, for football fans to watch the Nigeria Falconets take on Senegal in a crucial FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup qualifying match on Saturday 7 February, 2026.

The State Government said the free access is in the spirit of the Golden Jubilee celebrations, aimed at giving residents a sense of inclusion while rallying support for the national women’s team.

The first-leg qualifier, initially slated for the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan, was moved to the MKO Abiola Sports Complex following concerns over the poor condition of the Ibadan pitch.

Announcing the development on Friday, the Commissioner for Sports Development, Wasiu Isiaka, called on football lovers to troop out in large numbers to cheer the Falconets to victory.

Isiaka assured that the Abiodun-led administration remains committed to providing the necessary backing for female football and other National teams hosted in the State to excel on the international stage.

He described the match as a high-stakes encounter, with both Nigeria and Senegal battling for a place at the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup scheduled to hold in Poland.

According to him, the Government’s decision to open the stadium gates is expected to further boost the morale of the players, while also showcasing Ogun State’s strong commitment to sports development.

“The presence of fans will not only inspire the players but also demonstrate Ogun State’s collective support for sports,” Isiaka said, adding that all national teams playing in Abeokuta would continue to enjoy full government support.

He urged supporters to arrive early to secure seats and be part of what promises to be an exciting fixture.

“The Falconets’ clash with Senegal is crucial. This is a history-making team that has never missed a World Cup qualification, and Ogun State is leaving no stone unturned to ensure they qualify again,” he noted.

Isiaka also emphasized that the Governor’s gesture aligns with the ongoing Ogun @50 celebrations and sports development agenda under the I.S.E.Y.A. mantra of the administration.

“This celebration is about giving Ogun residents, especially the people of Abeokuta, a true feel of the anniversary. Abeokuta is the home of football, and we must show the world that we are a football-loving state,” he added.

The second leg of the qualifier is scheduled to take place in Dakar, Senegal, on February 14.
