NULGE Directs Ogun LG Staff to Join Strike Over Unmet Demands

The Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in Ogun State has directed all Local Government staff in the State to comply with the ongoing strike called by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). The directive was issued by the NULGE State President, Comrade Adebayo Adefesobi Oluomo, following a meeting with Union members.
According to Comrade Oluomo, the strike is aimed at pressing home several demands that have been long overdue. These demands include the Stoppage of the Contributory Pension Scheme, which workers claim has not been beneficial to them. The workers are also demanding the payment of the New Minimum Wage, which is different from the wage award, arguing that the current wage structure is not reflective of the economic realities.
Another key demand is the Payment of Outstanding eight years’ Leave Allowance, which workers claim has not been paid despite repeated promises by the Government. The Union is also demanding the immediate implementation of the already approved 2023/2024 promotion that was staggered, arguing that the delay has caused undue hardship to workers who have been expecting promotions.
Furthermore, the workers are demanding Consequential Adjustment of Minimum Pension, which they claim is necessary to ensure that Pensioners receive a decent living wage. Comrade Oluomo emphasized that these demands are non-negotiable and that the Union will not back down until they are met.
The Union Leader urged members to remain resolute and united in their quest for the realization of their demands. He assured that the Union would engage with relevant stakeholders to find a lasting solution to the issues. “We will not relent until our demands are met. We are committed to securing a better deal for our members, and we will not back down,” he said.
The strike has brought to the fore the long-standing grievances of Civil/Public Servants in Ogun State, who have been demanding better working conditions and improved welfare packages. With the NULGE’s directive, it is expected that all Local Government Staff will comply with the strike action as instructed by the NLC and TUC until their demands are met.
The development has raised concerns about the potential impact on essential services and economic activities in the State. However, the Union remains resolute in its determination to secure a better deal for its members. As the situation continues to unfold, residents and stakeholders are eagerly awaiting a resolution to the impasse.
