NUJ Mourns ‘Golden Voice’ Hakeem Akintunde, Describes Him as Fallen Titan of Ogun Media

The Ogun State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed profound grief over the death of Veteran Broadcaster and sports writer, Alhaji Hakeem Akintunde, describing him as a fallen titan whose impact on journalism and sports broadcasting in the State remains indelible.

In a condolence message made available to Global Mirror News on Thursday February 12, the Council said it received news of Akintunde’s transition with heavy hearts but in total submission to the will of the Almighty.

The statement, jointly signed by the Chairman of the Ogun NUJ, Comrade Wale Olanrewaju, and the Secretary, Comrade Bunmi Adigun, paid glowing tribute to the late media icon, whom it characterized as “a gem of inestimable value” and a standard-bearer in the broadcasting profession.

According to the Union, Akintunde was “Broadcasting Personified,” whose voice became a signature of excellence on the airwaves. He was widely celebrated for his eloquence, clarity, and commanding presence in the studio.

“His voice was not just a tool of his trade; it was a gift to the public — a golden voice that commanded attention and delivered information with unparalleled grace,” the statement read.

Global Mirror News reports that the late Akintunde built a formidable reputation as a sports writer and broadcaster, earning respect across media circles for his depth of knowledge and passionate delivery. Colleagues described him as a walking encyclopedia of sports history who possessed a rare ability to translate the energy of the stadium into compelling narratives for listeners and readers alike.

The NUJ noted that beyond reporting match scores, Akintunde told stories of human triumph and resilience, turning sporting events into memorable experiences for audiences across Ogun State and beyond.

The Council further described him as a quintessential goal-getter who rejected mediocrity and approached every assignment with a resolute “can-do” spirit that inspired both peers and younger professionals.

Significantly, the Union highlighted his role as a mentor and bridge between generations in the newsroom. His guidance, patience, and encouragement, it said, helped shape the careers of many young broadcasters who now hold positions of responsibility within and outside the State.

While lamenting the “profound silence on the airwaves” occasioned by his passing, the NUJ emphasized that his legacy of professionalism, integrity, and excellence would continue to guide those he mentored.

“To his immediate family, we offer our most sincere sympathies. We share in your pain because Hakeem was more than a colleague; he was a brother and a beacon of light for the entire NUJ family,” the statement added.

The Council prayed for Almighty Allah to grant the deceased eternal rest and for his family the fortitude to bear the irreparable loss.

Alhaji Hakeem Akintunde’s death marks the end of a distinguished era in Ogun State broadcasting, but as colleagues affirm, his voice and vision will echo for generations to come.
