Nollywood Mourns as Actress Aunty Ajara Dies After Prolonged Illness

The Nigerian film industry has been thrown into mourning following the death of Nollywood Actress Ajara Lasisi, widely known by fans as Aunty Ajara.

Global Mirror News gathered that the actress passed away in the early hours of Thursday after a prolonged illness. The sad news was confirmed by Nollywood Director and Producer, Tobi Oladele Teemony, popularly called Tee Mony, in a statement shared on his official Instagram page.

“With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of our beloved Actress, Aunty Ajara. She passed on overnight after a long and courageous battle with illness,” Teemony stated.

According to him, the late actress received overwhelming support during her illness, including prayers, financial assistance and encouragement from colleagues, fans and well-wishers across Nigeria and beyond.

“We are deeply grateful to everyone who stood by her with prayers, contributions, encouragement and compassion,” he added, while appealing to the public to stop sending donations to the account earlier shared for her medical care, noting that further contributions were no longer needed.

Teemony also extended condolences to the bereaved family, friends and members of the Nollywood community affected by the loss.

The announcement was accompanied by a video message from the actress’ elder brother, Ridwan Lasisi, who confirmed her passing and expressed appreciation to everyone who supported the family during the difficult period.

“Good morning to you all. My name is Ridwan Lasisi. I am a brother to Ajara. The Doctor confirmed to us this morning that Ajara has passed on. On behalf of the family, we want to appreciate everyone — industry members, colleagues and supporters,” he said.

He further reiterated that donations should cease, stressing that the appeal for funds had ended.

Global Mirror News reports that the actress’ death came barely a week after Teemony and other Nollywood figures, including Ronke Oshodi Oke, publicly appealed for urgent financial assistance, explaining that her health had deteriorated despite ongoing treatment and support from colleagues and kind-hearted Nigerians.

At the time, it was disclosed that significant funds had already been spent on her care, yet her condition continued to worsen, prompting renewed calls for help.

Earlier reports had indicated that Aunty Ajara was pregnant and battling a liver-related ailment, with colleagues revealing that she had been placed on oxygen as her condition became critical.

Several Nollywood stars, among them Wumi Toriola, Mide Martins, Afeez Owo and Ronke Oshodi Oke, had actively mobilised support and raised public awareness about her health struggles.

Her death has since sparked an outpouring of tributes across social media, as colleagues and fans remember her for her talent, humility and contributions to the Nigerian film industry.
