NNPCL Inspection Signals Imminent Oil Production at Ogun’s Eba Well

Ogun State has taken another step toward joining Nigeria’s oil-producing States as a technical delegation from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) inspected the Eba oil well in Ogun Waterside Local Government Area.

The visit comes amid final preparations for commercial drilling, following President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s approval for full-scale exploration at the site.

The inspection team, drawn from NNPCL, the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), and relevant security agencies, assessed the well’s technical condition and overall readiness for production activities.

The delegation was led by Hussein Aliyu, Project Coordinator for Enserv, who headed the NNPCL Enserv technical team.

Other members of the team included Wasiu Adeniyi, Onwugba Kelechi, Engr. Rabiu M. Audu, Ojonoka Braimah, Ahmad Usman, Akinbosola Oluwaseyi, Salisu Nuhu, James Amezhinim, Yusuf Abdul-Azeez, Amararu Isukul and Livinus J. Kigbu.

Reacting to the development, Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun, described the inspection as a major milestone, noting that commercial drilling at Eba would boost the State’s economy, generate employment, and deepen Federal Government presence in coastal communities.

He recalled that earlier Geological Studies had confirmed hydrocarbon deposits in the Ogun Waterside axis, prompting NNPCL’s initial surveys and technical engagements.

The State Government, he added, also conducted an independent verification of the oil well’s coordinates, which confirmed that the discovery lies within Ogun State’s territorial boundaries.

Security has remained a key focus around the project, with naval personnel deployed to the Eba site for more than 18 months to safeguard the facility, an effort supported by the Ogun State Government.

Industry stakeholders view the Eba oil well as part of Nigeria’s broader strategy to diversify oil production beyond the Niger Delta.

They noted that the next phase of work would prioritise regulatory approvals, host community engagement, environmental safeguards and a seamless transition into commercial operations.

The Ogun State Government also commended President Tinubu for backing the development of frontier oil basins, describing the move as a step toward a more balanced and inclusive distribution of the nation’s energy resources.
