NIS Increases Passport Fees: What You Need to Know

The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has announced a significant increase in the cost of obtaining a Nigerian Standard Passport, effective September 1, 2025. According to a statement signed by the Service Public Relations Officer, ACI AS Akinlabi, the new fees will apply only to applications made within Nigeria.

The revised fee structure sets the cost of a 32-page passport with a 5-year validity at N100,000, while the 64-page passport with a 10-year validity will cost N200,000. However, the statement clarified that application fees for Nigerians in the diaspora remain unchanged at $150 for the 32-page, five-year passport and $230 for the 64-page, 10-year passport.

The NIS explained that the adjustment is aimed at maintaining the quality and integrity of the Nigerian passport while ensuring accessibility for citizens. This latest review comes barely a year after the Federal Government approved an earlier upward adjustment in August 2024, which took effect from September 1, 2024.

In August 2024, the Federal Government increased the cost of a 32-page, five-year passport booklet from N35,000 to N50,000, while the 64-page, 10-year booklet went from N70,000 to N100,000. The Immigration Service then explained that the increment was necessary to sustain the quality of the Nigerian passport and enhance service delivery.

The latest increase is likely to have a significant impact on citizens who require passports for travel and other purposes. Many Nigerians may find it challenging to afford the new fees, especially given the country’s current economic challenges.

Despite the increase, the NIS assured citizens that the quality and integrity of the Nigerian passport will be maintained. The service emphasized that the adjustment is necessary to ensure the continued production of high-quality passports that meet international standards.

As the new fees take effect on September 1, 2025, citizens are advised to plan accordingly and budget for the increased cost of obtaining a Nigerian Standard Passport.
