NiHSA Warns of Imminent Flooding in Kogi, Anambra, Delta, Others

The Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NiHSA) has raised alarm over possible flooding in several States, following reports of rising water levels along parts of the River Niger and River Benue.

The Agency’s latest monitoring indicates that Kogi, Anambra, and Delta states are at high risk, while Benue, Adamawa, Niger, and Bayelsa may also experience significant flooding in the coming days.

Addressing journalists at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, the Director General and Chief Executive Officer of NiHSA, Umar Muhammed, explained that recent hydrological readings show an increase in water levels that could overflow into adjoining communities if not properly managed.

Muhammed further revealed that flood evaluation exercises carried out in affected regions uncovered contamination in several shallow wells, a situation he attributed to floodwater intrusion, which poses a serious threat to public health.

He urged residents in flood-prone areas to take precautionary measures, including moving to higher grounds and avoiding the use of contaminated water sources.

The NiHSA boss reaffirmed the Agency’s commitment to continuous monitoring and timely dissemination of flood alerts in collaboration with other relevant Agencies.
