Nigerian Man to Hang in Malaysia Over Step-Grandson’s Murder

A Malaysian High Court has sentenced 48-year-old Nigerian National Ibekwe Emeka Augustine to death by hanging after finding him guilty of murdering his four-year-old step-grandson by throwing the child from the third floor of an apartment in the Setapak district of Kuala Lumpur.
Justice K. Muniandy convicted Augustine under Section 302 of the Malaysian Penal Code on Friday, a charge that mandates the death penalty or — alternatively — a long prison term with caning.
The offences occurred between 7:45 a.m. and 8:15 a.m. on November 29, 2020, when the court found that Augustine deliberately caused the child’s death at the Setapak apartment.
In the same proceedings, the court also convicted Augustine on four related charges stemming from the incident.
These included: attempted murder of his seven-year-old biological son; causing grievous hurt to his wife; attempted suicide; and sexual assault against his 25-year-old stepdaughter.
Sentences for these additional counts amounting to five years’ imprisonment are to run concurrently with the death sentence.
Global Mirror News gathered that Justice Muniandy described the acts as inhumane and emphasised that they continued even after efforts by family members to intervene.
Augustine maintains the right to appeal the High Court’s decision.
