Nigeria Holds 36th Spot Among World’s Most Corrupt Nations in 2025

Nigeria has once again been listed among the world’s most corrupt Nations, retaining its position as the 36th most corrupt Country Globally in the 2025 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI) released by Transparency International.
Global Mirror News gathered that despite remaining in the same corruption bracket as last year, Nigeria’s overall global standing declined, slipping from 140th position in 2024 to 142nd out of 182 countries assessed in 2025.
The CPI evaluates perceived levels of public-sector corruption using expert assessments and surveys, scoring countries on a scale of 0 to 100, where 0 denotes extreme corruption and 100 indicates a very clean public sector.
Nigeria scored 26 points, a figure analysts say highlights persistent challenges in governance, accountability and institutional transparency.
According to Global Mirror News, Nigeria shared the same score and corruption ranking with Cameroon, Guatemala, Guinea, Kyrgyzstan and Papua New Guinea, placing all six countries firmly among the lower-performing Nations on the index.
Despite sustained anti-corruption rhetoric and policy reforms over the years, Global Mirror News reports that Transparency International observed little measurable improvement in Nigeria’s corruption control efforts, noting that the Country’s performance reflects stagnation rather than progress.
On the Global scale, Denmark topped the ranking as the least corrupt Country in the World, followed by Finland, Singapore and New Zealand.
Global Mirror News learned that no African Nation made it into the top 10 cleanest Countries worldwide, underscoring the continent’s broader governance challenges.
Within Africa, however, Seychelles, Cabo Verde and Botswana emerged as the least corrupt Countries on the Continent, outperforming many of Africa’s largest economies, including Nigeria.
At the bottom of the global ranking, South Sudan and Somalia were listed among the most corrupt Countries, while Venezuela was ranked as the most corrupt Nation Worldwide.
Transparency International warned that corruption remains a significant Global concern, with many Countries recording stagnation or regression in efforts to strengthen institutions, uphold the rule of law and curb abuse of public office.
Global Mirror News analysis indicates that for Nigeria to improve its ranking, experts are calling for stronger enforcement of anti-corruption laws, greater judicial independence, improved transparency in public finance, and sustained political will across all levels of Government.
