Nigeria Condemns US Visa Restrictions, Calls For Reconsideration

The Federal Government of Nigeria has expressed deep concern over the United States’ recent decision to impose stricter visa restrictions on Nigerian citizens. The new policy limits non-immigrant visas to three months with single entry, affecting various categories, including:

B1/B2 Visas (Business and Tourism): Reduced validity period may hinder business activities and tourism between the two countries.

F Visas (Student): Shorter visa validity may impact Nigerian students pursuing education in the US, making it challenging to complete their studies without frequent visa renewals.

J Visas (Exchange Visitor): Restrictions may affect cultural and educational exchanges, potentially limiting opportunities for Nigerians to participate in exchange programs.

The Nigerian Government views this development as “misaligned with the principles of reciprocity, equity, and mutual respect” that should guide bilateral engagements between friendly nations. While acknowledging the US Government’s sovereign right to determine its immigration policies, Nigeria respectfully urges the US to reconsider this decision in the spirit of partnership, cooperation, and shared global responsibilities.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs described the decision as disproportionate and urged the US government to reverse its decision.

Diplomatic engagements are ongoing, with the Ministry committed to pursuing a resolution that reflects fairness and upholds the values of mutual interest.

The restriction is expected to have a broad impact on Nigerians, affecting students, professionals, families, and individuals contributing to cultural and educational exchanges. The Nigerian Government emphasizes that the restriction could hamper cultural and educational exchanges that have long been a foundation of US-Nigeria relations
