Nigeria Cancels Independence Day Parade, Retains Other Events

The Federal Government has announced the cancellation of this year’s Independence Day parade, a major highlight of Nigeria’s annual October 1st celebrations.

In a statement released on Monday by the Director of Information and Public Relations, the Government explained that while the parade will not hold, all other activities marking the country’s 65th Independence anniversary will proceed as scheduled.

The statement noted that the decision was taken after due consideration, though it did not provide specific reasons for the cancellation.

It, however, stressed that the move was not intended to diminish the significance of Independence Day but to adjust the programme in line with present realities.

“The Federal Government deeply regrets any inconvenience the cancellation may cause and seeks the understanding and cooperation of all Nigerians, members of the diplomatic community and invited guests,” the statement read.

Authorities also reaffirmed President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Administration’s commitment to reforms aimed at strengthening National unity and economic recovery, assuring citizens that Nigeria’s independence remains a moment of pride and reflection despite the scaled-back celebration.

The parade, traditionally held at Eagle Square in Abuja with the military, paramilitary Agencies, students, and cultural groups on display, is one of the most symbolic elements of Nigeria’s Independence Day.

Its cancellation has drawn mixed reactions, with some viewing it as a cost-saving measure while others see it as downplaying a National tradition.

As preparations continue for the remaining programmes, Nigerians are expected to mark the day with official addresses, cultural performances, and other commemorative activities across the Country.
