Newborn Abandoned in Bush, Mother Arrested

The Nasarawa State Police Command has apprehended a final-year student of the National Certificate in Education (NCE) programme at the College of Education, Akwanga, for allegedly abandoning her newborn baby in a bush.
The suspect, whose identity has not been disclosed, was arrested after being identified as the mother of the child.
The newborn baby girl was found wrapped in a cloth and dumped in a bush near Hope Academy Primary School, along AA Koto Street, Akwanga, on Wednesday.
Residents discovered the baby alive and immediately alerted the police.
The authorities quickly sprang into action, launching an investigation that led to the arrest of the mother.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Ramhan Nansel, the Commissioner of Police has ordered the transfer of the case to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Lafia, for thorough investigation and prosecution.
“The mother of the baby has been identified and arrested.
The CP has directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Lafia, for comprehensive investigation and prosecution of the suspect,” Nansel stated.
The incident has sparked outrage among locals, with many expressing shock and anger over the act.
The community is awaiting the outcome of the investigation, hoping for justice for the abandoned child.
The baby is currently receiving medical attention and will be handed over to the appropriate social welfare authorities for proper care.
This incident comes on the heels of similar cases of child abandonment reported in other parts of Nigeria.
In July, a farmer in Kebbi State rescued a newborn baby girl who had been buried alive on his farm.
These recurring incidents have raised concerns about the need for stronger social protection systems and community interventions to prevent such cases.
