Nationwide Blackout: Nigeria’s Power Grid Collapses Again

A Nationwide blackout has plunged Nigeria into darkness as the National power grid collapsed for the third time this year.
The incident occurred on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, at 11:23 am, according to the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC).
The AEDC confirmed the collapse in a public notice, stating,
“Please be informed that the power outage currently being experienced is due to a loss of supply from the National Grid at 11:23 am today, affecting electricity supply across our franchise areas.”
The Company assured customers that efforts were underway to restore power as soon as possible.
The collapse has resulted in widespread power outages across major cities, including Lagos and Abuja.
According to reports, power generation dropped drastically from 2,917.83 megawatts to just 1.5 megawatts between 11 am and 12 pm.
Only a few distribution companies received minimal load allocation, with Abuja and Ibadan DisCos each getting 20 megawatts, while Benin DisCo recorded 10 megawatts.
Other distribution companies, including Eko, Ikeja, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Port Harcourt, Enugu, and Yola DisCos, were completely cut off.
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed the system collapse and assured the public that engineers are working tirelessly to restore normal supply as quickly as possible.
“We are aware of the current system disturbance on the national grid.
Our engineers are working tirelessly to restore normal supply as quickly as possible,” the TCN stated.
This latest collapse highlights the fragility of Nigeria’s electricity network, which has been plagued by repeated system disturbances in recent years.
Energy experts warn that without urgent reforms and investment, Nigeria’s grid will remain fragile, leaving the country stuck in a cycle of blackouts, economic disruption, and public distrust.
