Nation Mourns: Tinubu Declares 7-Day Mourning Period For Former President Buhari

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declared a seven-day mourning period in honor of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, at the age of 82.

According to a statement by the President’s media aide, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu directed that all National Flags fly at half-mast across the Country for seven days, starting from Sunday.

The President also announced that the Federal Government will accord Buhari a State funeral, befitting his towering contributions to the country. Tinubu has summoned an emergency Federal Executive Council session on Tuesday, dedicated to honoring the late Buhari.

Vice President Kashim Shettima and Femi Gbajabiamila, the Speaker of the House of Representatives, will accompany Buhari’s body to Nigeria.

Buhari’s death was confirmed by his former spokespersons, Garba Shehu and Bashir Ahmed, in separate statements on Sunday.

Several Nigerian leaders, including former President Olusegun Obasanjo, former Minister Rauf Aregbesola, former Attorney-General Abubakar Malami, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, and former Federal Lawmaker Shehu Sani, have paid tribute to Buhari, describing him as a patriot, statesman, and leader who served Nigeria with conviction and integrity.

Buhari is expected to be buried in Daura, Katsina State, on Monday. The Federal Government will ensure that all necessary arrangements are made for a dignified burial.

The Nation is mourning the loss of a leader who played a significant role in shaping Nigeria’s history. Buhari’s legacy will continue to be remembered for his commitment to public service and national development. May Allah grant him Aljannatul Firdaus.
