NAFDAC Clears the Air as Amoxicillin Ban Rumour Triggers Public Alarm

Global Mirror News reports that Nigeria’s drug regulatory authority, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), has debunked widespread claims suggesting that amoxicillin has been banned in Nigeria, describing the information as false and misleading.

The clarification follows a surge of online videos and social media posts that caused public concern, especially among patients and healthcare providers who rely on the antibiotic for the treatment of common bacterial infections.

In a statement issued via its official communication channels, NAFDAC stressed that Amoxicillin remains approved for use in Nigeria and has not been withdrawn from circulation.

According to the Agency, what exists are periodic regulatory actions against specific substandard or falsified brands and batches, not a total ban on the medication.

Global Mirror News gathered that NAFDAC routinely monitors medicines in circulation and may recall products that fail laboratory quality tests, lack adequate active ingredients, or pose potential health risks.

Such actions, the agency noted, are standard regulatory practices and should not be misinterpreted as a prohibition of the drug itself.

The Agency further urged Nigerians to verify drug-related information from official NAFDAC updates and warned that misinformation could lead to panic buying, misuse of antibiotics, or reluctance to seek proper medical treatment.

Health experts also caution that misuse and misinformation surrounding antibiotics could worsen antimicrobial resistance, a growing global public health concern.
