N50m Paid as Abducted Edo Doctor Finally Regains Freedom

An Edo-based Medical Doctor, Dr. Ibrahim Tahir, has been released from captivity after his family and supporters raised ₦50 million to secure his freedom, Global Mirror News has gathered.

Dr. Tahir was abducted on January 2, 2026, alongside his younger brother at their family residence along City Pride Road, Igbira Camp, Auchi, while they were opening the gate to their compound.

The incident threw the community into mourning days later when the lifeless body of the younger brother was discovered near Orley River on January 5. He was reportedly killed by the abductors.

Speaking in a telephone interview with Global Mirror News on Thursday, the victims’ father disclosed that the ransom was paid in two installments of ₦20 million and ₦30 million before Dr. Tahir was finally released on Wednesday evening at about 8:00 p.m.

According to him, the money was raised through the combined efforts of the family, Non-Governmental Organisations, friends, and well-wishers who rallied together to save the doctor’s life.

He further revealed that during the period of captivity, Dr. Tahir sustained a bullet graze on his leg, while one of the kidnappers was also injured after an encounter with vigilantes and local hunters who attempted to ambush the criminals before the victim’s release.

“My son has been released by the kidnappers after we paid ₦50 million. I feel relieved that he is free, but the pain of losing another son remains,” the father said.

“The family, organisations, friends and well-wishers contributed to raise the money. My son was grazed by a bullet, but he is currently receiving treatment at a hospital.”

The Edo State Police Command confirmed the development. The Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Eno Ikoedem, told Global Mirror News in a telephone interview that the doctor had regained his freedom.

“I can confirm to you that the Doctor has been released,” she said.

The incident has once again drawn attention to the growing security concerns in parts of Edo State and the devastating impact of kidnapping on families and communities.
