Mother of Quintuplets Dies Hours After Delivery, Five Newborns Survive

A wave of grief has swept through Kano following the death of Hafsatu Yusuf, a woman who had just delivered quintuplets at Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital.

Global Mirror News gathered that Yusuf passed away in the early hours of Thursday, around 2 a.m., after suffering severe post-delivery complications.

According to the Kano State Ministry of Health, the mother experienced prolonged and uncontrollable bleeding shortly after giving birth to five babies — three boys and two girls.

The Public Relations Officer of the ministry, Nabilusi Abubakar K/Na’isa, confirmed the development in a telephone interview, explaining that despite the intensive efforts of medical personnel, her condition could not be stabilised.

“She had been bleeding since after delivery, and all efforts by doctors to control the situation were unsuccessful,” he stated.

The late Yusuf has since been buried in accordance with Islamic rites at her residence in Hotoro, Kano.

While the loss has left the family and community devastated, there is a glimmer of hope as the quintuplets are reported to be in stable condition. Global Mirror News understands that the newborns are currently receiving specialised medical care at the hospital.

In the wake of the tragedy, the Kano State Ministry of Health has appealed to the public for support for the surviving infants, particularly in providing essential items such as baby milk and care supplies.

This heartbreaking incident occurred barely a day after the Kano State Government announced it had taken full responsibility for the medical care of both the mother and her babies following the successful delivery.

Earlier reports had indicated that the quintuplets were delivered safely and placed under close medical supervision. The deceased’s husband, Malam Salisu Nufi’u, had at the time expressed gratitude to the state government for its timely intervention and support.

Global Mirror News reports that the state government has reiterated its commitment to strengthening maternal and child healthcare services, with renewed focus on reducing preventable deaths across Kano and beyond.
