Mob Lynches Woman in Niger State Over Alleged Blasphemy

A disturbing incident of mob violence has occurred in Kasuwan-Garba town, Mariga Local Government Area (LGA) of Niger State, resulting in the death of a woman.
The victim, a restaurant owner, was allegedly lynched and burnt alive by a mob after making comments considered blasphemous by some members of the Community.
According to reports, the incident occurred on August 30, 2025, when a customer jokingly proposed marriage to the woman, citing the tradition of the Prophet.
In response, she made remarks that some people deemed offensive to the Islamic faith. The situation quickly escalated, and a mob formed, overwhelming security operatives who had taken the woman into custody for investigation.
Despite being handed over to security operatives by the District Head of Kasuwan-Garba, the mob attacked and set the woman ablaze before reinforcements could arrive at the scene.
The Police have confirmed the incident and launched an investigation to identify and prosecute those responsible.
The Niger State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer, Wasiu Abiodun, condemned the act of jungle justice and appealed to the public to remain calm and allow security Agencies to handle sensitive matters according to the law.
“The Police Command strongly condemns the act of jungle justice and assures that efforts are underway to identify, arrest, and prosecute all those involved in the crime,” Abiodun stated.
This incident has sparked widespread concern among residents and human rights advocates about the growing trend of mob violence in parts of the Country.
Many are calling for more proactive measures to prevent the breakdown of law and order and ensure that justice is served through the proper channels.
The Police are working to bring the perpetrators to justice, and the Community is grappling with the aftermath of the tragic event.
As the investigation continues, many are left wondering how such incidents can be prevented in the future and what role Community Leaders and Security Agencies can play in promoting tolerance and understanding.
