MBBS Dream Turns Tragic: Jaunpur Medical Aspirant Allegedly Amputates Own Foot to Exploit Disability Quota

Jaunpur Police have uncovered a disturbing twist in a case initially reported as an attempted murder, revealing that a 23-year-old Medical aspirant may have deliberately amputated his own foot in a desperate attempt to secure admission into a medical college under the disability quota.

The incident came to light after Akash Bhaskar filed a complaint at the Line Bazaar Police Station, claiming that unknown assailants attacked his younger brother, Suraj Bhaskar, at their residence in Khalilpur village and severed his left foot while he was asleep. An attempted murder case was subsequently registered.

However, as the investigation progressed, Police said multiple inconsistencies emerged. Officers recovered a personal diary allegedly belonging to Suraj, containing entries such as “I will become an MBBS doctor in 2026” and repeated mentions of “amputation”, prompting investigators to doubt the claim of an external attack.

According to Police findings, Suraj had been experiencing severe mental stress after failing the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) twice. Investigators also reported no signs of forced entry into the house, further weakening the version of events presented in the initial complaint.

Electronic and technical evidence indicated that the alleged attack, said to have occurred between midnight and 5 a.m., should have resulted in massive blood loss—yet no such evidence was found at the scene. A syringe containing an anaesthetic substance was later recovered during a search of the area.

Police further revealed that Suraj had previously approached Banaras Hindu University (BHU) to obtain a disability certificate for a minor hand impairment. The certificate was reportedly denied after medical evaluation showed his disability level fell below the required benchmark.

Based on evidence gathered so far, investigators suspect the youth may have amputated his foot using a grinder machine, a tool commonly used in construction and mechanical work. Suraj is currently undergoing treatment and is said to be in stable condition.

Authorities said they are seeking legal opinion on the appropriate criminal charges to be filed as the investigation continues.
