Matriarch, Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo, Dies at 100

The family of Chief Victor Olabisi Onabanjo, former Governor of Ogun State, has announced the passing of their revered matriarch, Chief (Mrs.) Lucia Onabowale Onabanjo (1925–2026), who died peacefully on Monday, January 12, 2026.

In a statement made available to Global Mirror News, the family described her transition as a moment of deep sorrow but also one of thanksgiving to Almighty God for a long, impactful and fulfilled life.

Chief (Mrs.) Lucia Onabanjo was the mother of the Chairman of the Ogun State Local Government Service Commission, (Ms. Olivia Olubukunola Onabanjo), a position through which her values of discipline, service and integrity were said to have reflected strongly in public service.

Following her passing, the Ogun State Local Government Service Commission joins the Onabanjo family in mourning her demise, describing her as a woman of rare virtue, deep faith and exceptional moral strength.

The Commission commiserates with the family and pray for the peaceful repose of her soul.

The late matriarch was widely respected as a mother, grandmother and great-grandmother whose influence extended across generations.

Her life, according to the family, was a testimony of love, humility and dedication to God and humanity.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course.
