Marriage Becoming Unaffordable: Sokoto Govt Targets Lavish Pre-Wedding Ceremonies

Global Mirror News gathered that the Sokoto State Government is set to strictly enforce an existing law banning extravagant pre-wedding activities, as rising marriage costs are increasingly discouraging young men and women from getting married.
Sokoto State Governor, Ahmed Aliyu, made this known on Friday while commissioning the remodelled Zawiyatu Sheikh Aliyu Bunza Jumu’at Mosque and Islamiyya School in the State capital.
He lamented that excessive financial demands tied to pre-wedding ceremonies have made marriage unaffordable for many youths.
According to the Governor, some families insist on elaborate celebrations and displays that place heavy financial pressure on intending couples, a development he said is contributing to the growing number of unmarried men and women across Sokoto State.
Global Mirror News gathered that the Governor disclosed that many parents and guardians routinely violate the law regulating marriage expenses, prompting the State Government to convene stakeholders to review the regulations and ensure full compliance.
Governor Aliyu further warned that the high cost of marriage is pushing some youths into immoral behaviour, stressing the need for collective action.
He called on Islamic scholars, traditional rulers, parents and guardians to support the enforcement of the law in the interest of social stability.
Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to promoting Islamic values, the Governor said the state would continue to invest in mosque construction and renovation, Islamiyya schools, and the welfare of Qur’anic teachers, Imams and preachers.
