Many Feared Dead as Bus, Truck Collide on Lagos–Ibadan Expressway
A deadly road crash on Thursday, January 1, 2026, along Nigeria’s busy Lagos–Ibadan Expressway has left many passengers feared dead, Global Mirror News reports.
The accident occurred opposite the NASFAT junction in Ogun State and involved an 18-seater commercial bus travelling from Lagos and a heavy-duty truck heading from Ibadan.
Eyewitnesses at the scene said the truck was attempting a U-turn near the NASFAT Area when the bus slammed into it at high speed.
The force of the collision reportedly caused the bus to plunge underneath the truck, severely damaging its front section and trapping several passengers inside.
Videos from the scene showed mangled metal, unconscious victims on the ground, and frantic rescue efforts by residents and emergency responders.
Global Mirror News gathered that some passengers were trapped for a long time as bystanders struggled to free them before the arrival of full emergency support.
Several others were said to have sustained life-threatening injuries, while fears mounted that multiple occupants may have lost their lives, although official casualty figures were yet to be confirmed as of press time.
Rescue operations were ongoing hours after the crash, with victims evacuated to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention.
Traffic along the expressway was partially disrupted, causing long queues as security Agencies worked to secure the Area.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Ogun State, Afolabi Odunsi-Oyewole, said the command had been alerted and deployed personnel to the scene.
He added that while rescue efforts were in progress, a detailed report on the number of casualties and the exact cause of the crash was still being compiled.
The Lagos–Ibadan Expressway remains one of Nigeria’s most critical transport corridors, linking the nation’s commercial capital to several States.
However, it has also recorded frequent fatal accidents, often attributed to speeding, reckless driving, and illegal manoeuvres.
Authorities have renewed calls for motorists to exercise caution, obey traffic regulations, and avoid dangerous driving practices to prevent further loss of lives on the highway.
