Low Turnout in Lagos, Other States Forces Extension of Nigeria Police Recruitment Deadline

Global Mirror News has learned that the Police Service Commission (PSC), in collaboration with the Nigeria Police Force (NPF), has extended the deadline for the ongoing Nationwide Police recruitment exercise following low application numbers from several States, including Lagos.
The recruitment portal, which was initially scheduled to close on January 25, 2026, will now remain open until February 8, 2026. The extension, according to the PSC, is aimed at addressing uneven participation across States and ensuring balanced representation in the intake of new Police Constables.
In a statement issued by the Commission, the PSC disclosed that while a large number of applications have been received Nationwide since the exercise commenced, data analysis revealed significant disparities in turnout. States such as Lagos, Ogun, Bayelsa, Ebonyi and Anambra were identified as recording comparatively low numbers of applicants.
Global Mirror News gathered that the decision to extend the deadline followed an internal review of application figures, with concerns that some states could be underrepresented if the original closing date was maintained.
The PSC explained that the recruitment exercise is part of ongoing efforts to strengthen the Nigeria Police Force by bringing in qualified Nigerians from all parts of the Country, in line with the principle of Federal character and inclusiveness.
Prospective applicants have been reminded that the recruitment process is free of charge and can only be completed through the official online portal.
The Commission also warned against fraudsters and unauthorised Agents who demand payment in exchange for recruitment assistance or placement.
Meanwhile, Global Mirror News reports that the PSC has called on State Governments, Local Government Authorities, Traditional Rulers, Community Leaders, Religious organisations and other stakeholders to intensify public awareness campaigns and encourage eligible youths to take advantage of the extended application window.
The Commission reiterated its commitment to transparency and fairness throughout the recruitment process, assuring Nigerians that all applications will be assessed strictly on merit.
