Lagos Grants Motorists 90-Day Relief Window to Replace Faded Number Plates

The Lagos State Government has announced a three-month rebate programme allowing motorists to replace faded or illegible vehicle number plates at a reduced cost, in a move aimed at improving road safety, strengthening security architecture and encouraging regulatory compliance across the State.

The initiative, approved by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is being implemented through the Motor Vehicles Administration Agency (MVAA) and will run for 90 days at officially designated vehicle registration centres Statewide.

Authorities say the rebate is targeted at number plates that have deteriorated due to prolonged use, exposure to harsh weather conditions, or general wear and tear.

Speaking on the policy, the Permanent Secretary of the MVAA, Mr. Rasheed Muri-Okunola, described the rebate as a proactive intervention designed to ease the financial burden on motorists while promoting safer and more effective vehicle identification.

He noted that clear and legible number plates are essential for traffic management, crime prevention and the smooth operation of law enforcement systems.

Officials stressed that illegible plates pose challenges to surveillance, enforcement of traffic laws and digital vehicle-tracking platforms currently in use across Lagos.

The Government believes the rebate window will encourage voluntary compliance and reduce the prevalence of defective or unreadable number plates on major roads.

Motorists wishing to benefit from the rebate have been advised to visit the MVAA One Stop Centre in Oshodi or any other authorised MVAA centre across the state to complete the replacement process.

The Agency warned vehicle owners to avoid unauthorised agents or intermediaries, emphasising that all replacements must be processed through approved Government channels.
