Kano Inspector Dies in Gun Mishap

A Police Inspector, Aminu Ibrahim, attached to the Hotoro Division of the Kano State Police Command, has died after his rifle accidentally discharged while he was on guard duty in the early hours of Sunday.

The incident occurred at about 5:40 a.m. inside the premises of Basnaj Global Resources Limited in Hotoro, Kano.

According to accounts, the officer went into a toilet within the company compound with his AK-47 rifle slung around his neck. While attempting to squat, the rifle discharged, striking him in the abdomen.

Staff members on site were alerted by the gunshot and rushed to the scene, where they found Ibrahim critically injured and motionless.

He was immediately taken to the Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, but medical personnel confirmed him dead on arrival.

His body has since been deposited at the hospital mortuary for autopsy.

Investigators who arrived at the scene recovered the rifle, identified with registration number GT 4177, in a cocked and unsafe position.

An empty shell casing was also found. Of the 30 rounds of ammunition issued to him before his assignment, 29 were accounted for, indicating that only one bullet was fired — the fatal shot.

The tragic death has sent shockwaves through the Police Community, with colleagues describing Ibrahim as a dedicated and disciplined officer.

His passing has also triggered renewed debate on firearm safety among security personnel, especially regarding the risks of handling loaded rifles in non-combat situations.

When contacted, the Kano State Police Public Relations Officer, Haruna Abdullahi, declined to provide immediate details but assured that the Commissioner of Police would address the matter in a formal briefing.

Meanwhile, security observers and experts have called for intensified training and retraining on weapon safety protocols to prevent such avoidable tragedies within the force.
