Just In: Massive Fire Erupts at 22-Storey Lagos Building, Rescue Efforts Underway
Emergency responders are currently battling a large fire at the Great Nigeria Insurance House, a 22-storey building located on Martins Street, Lagos Island.
The building, which houses a warehouse for clothing materials alongside corporate offices and shops, was reported to have caught fire at around 5 p.m. on Wednesday.
According to Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), the blaze began on the fourth floor of the plaza before quickly spreading upwards to higher levels. “Upon arrival, our Shark Response Team discovered that the building was engulfed in flames.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the fire originated from one of the offices on the fourth floor and rapidly escalated to other floors,” he said.
At this time, the exact number of casualties remains unknown as firefighting and rescue operations continue.
Margaret Adeseye, Controller-General of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, confirmed that no casualties have been reported so far.
She noted that the fire has spread to the fifth floor, affecting several warehouses and corporate offices, but emergency teams are actively working to contain the blaze.
Residents and business owners in the vicinity have been urged to maintain a safe distance while authorities manage the ongoing situation.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
