Jealous Rage Ends 14-Year Marriage as Ogun Man Stabs Wife to Death, Drinks Poison
Fresh details have emerged surrounding the brutal killing of Ganiyat Ayanwale, a mother of three, allegedly murdered by her husband, Ayoola Ayanwale, in a violent domestic dispute in Ogun State.
The tragedy occurred on Thursday night at Olutayo Alao Street, River Valley Estate, in the Ogun axis of Ojodu Berger, where neighbours were thrown into panic after distress calls came from the couple’s apartment.
Ganiyat reportedly sustained multiple stab wounds and was rushed to Gifted Hospital, Olowora, where doctors confirmed her dead on arrival.
Investigators told Global Mirror News that after the attack, Ayoola allegedly consumed a suspected poisonous substance in what appeared to be an attempt to end his life before fleeing the scene.
Suspect Found Dead After Manhunt
Police sources disclosed that a manhunt was immediately launched for Ayoola following the killing. Several hours later, he was found gasping for breath in an open field in the Sotubo Area of Ogun State and later died.
Three knives were recovered from the crime scene, while items found on the suspect included two mobile phones, a voter’s card, an ATM card, and a bottle containing a suspicious liquid, confirming his link to the murder.
Brother Alleges Years of Domestic Abuse
The victim’s brother, Murtala Sogbade, told Global Mirror News that the marriage had been troubled by repeated violence and neglect for more than a decade.
“She was married to him for 14 years. At first, we thought it was just normal marital disagreements, but it later became serious. He was beating her and leaving her with bruises,” Sogbade said.
He added that family members had intervened several times, but things worsened late last year when Ayoola reportedly asked for a divorce.
“My sister also wanted to leave, but she didn’t want to be seen as the one who initiated the separation,” he added.
Housing Dispute and Final Tragedy
According to Sogbade, Ayoola’s family, who live abroad, allegedly offered ₦700,000 for Ganiyat to rent a new apartment with her three children — an amount he said was unrealistic.
“We were still searching for a place. Then suddenly, her 13-year-old child ran to me crying that their father had stabbed their mother to death,” he narrated.
He blamed the fatal outburst on jealousy, resentment, and neglect, saying Ayoola failed to provide for his family and was known for drug use.
Neighbours Confirm Pattern of Violence
A neighbour who identified herself on social media as @Irebamiolakanmi described the killing as the climax of years of domestic abuse.
“She told me she had peace only when he was not around. I advised her to leave, but she kept enduring because of her three children,” the neighbour wrote.
Police Confirm Investigation
Confirming the development, the Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Oluseyi Babaseyi, told Global Mirror News that the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department.
“The bodies have been deposited in the mortuary while investigations continue,” he said.
The tragedy adds to a growing number of domestic-violence-related deaths in Ogun State and across Nigeria.
