Ilorin Tragedy: Friendship Ends in Blood as Love Rivalry Turns Fatal

What began as a friendly evening chat between two young men in Ilorin ended in heartbreak and death , a grim reminder of how jealousy and anger can destroy even the strongest bonds of friendship.

In the bustling Oja Gboro area of Ilorin, 25-year-old Usman Tunde and his longtime friend, 21-year-old Gafar, reportedly clashed over a woman both admired. Eyewitnesses said the confrontation, which started casually at a sugarcane vendor’s stand, soon escalated into a violent quarrel.

“They were arguing over a girlfriend they both liked,” a resident said. “Before anyone could separate them, Gafar pulled out a knife and stabbed Usman in the chest. It all happened so fast.”

The victim, who lived in Ile-Soro 2, was rushed to a nearby hospital and later referred to the General Hospital, Ilorin, but doctors confirmed him dead on arrival.

Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said officers received a distress call around 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday. By the time they arrived, however, the suspect and members of his extended family had vanished.

The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, condemned the killing, commending residents for keeping the peace despite the shock.

“We understand the pain of losing a loved one in such a cruel way,” Ojo said. “But we urge everyone to remain calm as our officers intensify efforts to track down the suspect and bring him to justice.”

The once-quiet neighbourhood of Oja Gboro has since been thrown into mourning, with friends describing the late Usman as “gentle, kind, and full of dreams.” His death has left many wondering how love, a feeling meant to bring people together, could instead lead to such tragedy.

In a separate incident, the Enugu State Police Command has arraigned 46-year-old Livinus Okoh for allegedly killing his wife, Onyinyechi, at Amuri in Nkanu West Local Government Area. The state government has vowed to ensure justice for the victim.

As investigations continue, residents of Ilorin hope Gafar will be found soon — not just for justice, but to answer the painful question on everyone’s lips: how did friendship turn to bloodshed?
