Ikorodu Viral Arrest Drama: Lagos Police Trace Conductor, Probe Officer as CP Warns Against ‘Dramatisation’
The Lagos State Police Command has opened a full-scale investigation into a viral video capturing a dramatic confrontation involving Police Officers, LASTMA officials, and a commercial bus conductor in the Ikorodu Area of the State.
In a statement issued on Sunday, the Command’s spokesperson, SP Abimbola Adebisi, said the incident stemmed from a traffic enforcement operation after a commercial bus driver allegedly “deliberately used the bus to obstruct traffic flow,” causing severe gridlock and subjecting commuters to “untold hardship.”
According to the Police, the situation escalated when Officers attempted to arrest the bus conductor. In a bid to evade arrest, the conductor allegedly stripped himself, an act caught on camera and widely circulated across social media platforms.
Adebisi confirmed that the Police Officer seen in the viral footage has been identified and is now being investigated to determine whether his conduct aligned with professional standards during the confrontation.
The command further disclosed that the conductor involved has been located and summoned to appear before the Commissioner of Police on Monday for questioning. The commercial bus used to block the road has also been impounded and is currently in police custody.
Commissioner of Police, CP Olohundare Jimoh, urged Lagos residents to stay calm, maintain order, and promptly report any abuse of authority by security personnel. He assured the public that the matter would be thoroughly reviewed, stating that “justice will be done and any shortcomings will be addressed.”
However, he cautioned against sensationalising the matter or launching unwarranted attacks on the officer involved, noting that such behaviour “is not acceptable under the law.” Jimoh stressed that resisting lawful arrest is a criminal offence, regardless of public sentiment surrounding viral videos.
Reaffirming the Command’s commitment to transparency, the CP promised that the findings of the investigation would be made public upon conclusion.
