IBADAN SUCCESSION: Olubadan Stool Declared Vacant as Council Names New King

In a significant development, the Olubadan-in-Council has declared the Olubadan stool vacant following the passing of the 43rd Olubadan, Oba Lekan Olakulehin, on July 7, 2025. According to sources, the Council is expected to nominate High Chief Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, the Otun Olubadan and former Governor of Oyo State, as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland.
The council’s decision is in line with the traditional Ibadan succession system, which dictates that the Otun Olubadan is next in line to the throne. Ladoja’s nomination will be forwarded to Governor Seyi Makinde for ratification through the Ministry of Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters.
If confirmed, Ladoja’s ascension to the throne will mark a new era for Ibadanland. With his wealth of experience as a former Governor, he is expected to bring a unique perspective to the role. The Olubadan-in-Council’s decision is a significant moment in Ibadan’s history, and the outcome will shape the future of the kingdom.
Meanwhile, the burial activities for the late Olubadan are ongoing, with a grand finale scheduled for Friday, August 8, 2025, at the Cathedral of Saint Peters, Aremo, Ibadan. The event will be attended by prominent dignitaries and members of the Ibadan Community.
As the kingdom prepares to bid farewell to its late monarch, the anticipation surrounding Ladoja’s nomination is palpable. If confirmed, he will be expected to lead Ibadanland into a new era of prosperity and growth.
