Hon. Balogun Moves to End Decades of Flooding, Flags Off Kuto Road, Bridge Project in Abeokuta

The Chairman of Abeokuta South Local Government, Hon. Balogun Olaniyi Afeez (popularly known as BOA), has taken a decisive step to tackle years of flooding and poor road infrastructure in Kuto, Abeokuta, with the flag-off of a 1.266-kilometre road construction and the rehabilitation of the Isale-Oja Kuto Bridge.

Global Mirror News gathered that the intervention is aimed at providing lasting relief to residents and commuters who have endured persistent flooding and deteriorating road conditions for over two decades.

Speaking during the flag-off ceremony on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, community stakeholders described the project as long overdue, noting that the Area had suffered neglect despite its economic importance.
Market leaders, particularly the Iyaloja of Kuto Market, Mrs. Isiwatu Adewuyi, commended the Chairman for what they termed a bold and timely response to a lingering problem.

According to her, the road had remained in a deplorable state for more than 20 years, adding that Hon. Balogun’s administration is the first to demonstrate genuine commitment to its reconstruction.
Residents and other community leaders also recalled that although the road was initially constructed during the administration of former Ogun State Governor, Chief Olusegun Osoba, successive interventions failed to deliver a lasting solution. They noted that since 2003, the community has grappled with flooding and accessibility challenges.
They, however, expressed optimism that the ongoing project would mark a turning point, describing it as the most comprehensive rehabilitation effort witnessed in the Area so far.

While appreciating the Ogun State Government under Governor Dapo Abiodun for its support, the leaders emphasized that the collaboration between the State and Local Government has been instrumental in making the project a reality. They also appealed for the inclusion of Isabo linkage roads to further ease movement within the community.
Providing details on the project, the Supervisor for Works, Engr. Abidemi Lawal, explained that the 1.266km road and bridge rehabilitation were carefully designed to mitigate flooding and improve traffic flow.

He assured residents that the project would be completed within six weeks, stressing that qualified professionals have been engaged to ensure quality delivery.
He further disclosed that integrity tests had been conducted on the bridge, with adequate equipment set to be deployed for standard execution.
Engr. Lawal also urged residents to support the initiative by avoiding indiscriminate waste disposal and ensuring proper maintenance of drainage channels.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment, Hon. Balogun said the project aligns with his governance philosophy of “promises made, promises kept,” adding that people-focused development remains at the core of his agenda.
He also revealed plans to remodel the Kuto Market to address congestion and improve accessibility once the road project is completed.
“After delivering this road, our next focus will be the market. The transformation will speak for itself,” the Chairman stated.
Hon. Balogun further called on market women and community leaders to partner with the Council’s environmental sanitation unit to sustain the project and prevent future flooding.

The road project is expected to stretch from Isale-Oja Kuto to the Nawardeen Area near the Dental Centre, with additional plans to install refuse dump tanks to support effective Waste Management in the Area.
