Hit-and-Run Driver Arrested After Pedestrian’s Death in Lagos

A pedestrian lost his life on Sunday after being struck by a Nissan Jeep on the Ogudu flyover bridge, inward Ifako, Lagos.
The driver, who attempted to flee the scene, was swiftly apprehended by operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA).
Confirming the incident in a statement, LASTMA General Manager, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, said the driver tried to evade responsibility rather than assist the critically injured victim.
He explained that the crash occurred when the motorist, in a bid to outmanoeuvre a heavily laden truck, lost control and hit the pedestrian.
“LASTMA personnel, strategically positioned around the corridor, acted promptly to intercept the fleeing driver,” Bakare-Oki stated.
“They also facilitated the urgent evacuation of the victim, who, regrettably, later died from his injuries.”
The suspect was handed over to the Ogudu Police Division, which is conducting further investigations.
LASTMA officials also towed the wrecked vehicle to the station.
Bakare-Oki reiterated the agency’s warning against reckless driving, stressing that dangerous manoeuvres and speeding not only endanger motorists but also expose innocent pedestrians and other road users to grave risks.
