Heroic DPO Falls in Battle Against Katsina Cattle Rustlers; Community Joins Fight

In a courageous stand against criminality, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO)of Rimi Local Government Area, CSP Muhammad Sani Kabir, was killed on Friday February 13, while leading an operation to stop suspected cattle rustlers. Global Mirror News gathered that three of the assailants were neutralised in the daring operation that involved both security forces and local residents.
The Katsina State Ministry of Internal Security and Home Affairs confirmed the loss, with Commissioner Nasir Mu’azu describing the Officer as a “hero who gave his life protecting communities from violent criminals.”
Global Mirror News reports that the operation began late Thursday night after community leaders—including the ward councillor, APC members, the Village Head of Karare, and the District Head of Rimi—raised alarms about rustlers spotted in Magaji town, under Maje-Gobir Ward. CSP Kabir immediately mobilised a joint team of security operatives to respond.
Eyewitnesses told Global Mirror News that the rustlers launched an aggressive invasion of Magajen Gobir, forcing residents to rally in defence of their community. The confrontation stretched into the early hours of Friday, coinciding with Subh (dawn) prayers, during which several stolen cattle were recovered.
The situation escalated in neighbouring communities, with reports of two men and several young girls injured amid the chaos. But the combined efforts of security forces and vigilant residents ensured that most of the stolen animals were reclaimed.
The tragic climax came when CSP Kabir personally led the team to the rustlers’ stronghold. During the gunfight, his rifle malfunctioned, leaving him vulnerable to gunfire from the gang leader, identified as Maigemu. Three security personnel were also injured and are receiving treatment at Katsina Teaching Hospital, while the DPO’s remains were transferred to his family in Zaria, Kaduna State, for burial.
Global Mirror News highlights that both the bravery of security forces and the community’s swift action were crucial in foiling the rustlers’ plan. The Ministry reaffirmed Governor Dikko Umaru Radda’s commitment to protecting citizens and eliminating criminal gangs in the state. “CSP Kabir’s ultimate sacrifice will be remembered. We pray Almighty Allah grants him Aljannatul Firdausi,” said the Ministry.
