Half a Century Later: Armed Forces, Family Pay Tribute to Slain Kwara Governor Ibrahim Taiwo

Ogbomoso, Oyo State, became a solemn ground of reflection on Saturday as Military Authorities, Political Leaders and Residents gathered to commemorate 50 years since the assassination of former Kwara State Military Governor, Colonel Ibrahim Taiwo.
Global Mirror News gathered that the memorial ceremony, held at his gravesite and later at the Recreation Club, drew high-ranking officers of the Nigerian Armed Forces alongside members of the Taiwo family and community leaders, all united in remembrance of a life cut short during Nigeria’s turbulent 1976 coup.
Colonel Taiwo was abducted and killed on February 13, 1976, the same day coup plotters led by Lt. Col. Buka Dimka assassinated then Head of State, General Murtala Muhammed, in Lagos—an event that altered the course of Nigeria’s political history.
Speaking on behalf of the Chief of Defence Staff, General Olufemi Oluyede, the Deputy Commandant of the Nigerian Armed Forces Resettlement Centre, Major General Akinniyi Oyelade, said Taiwo’s name remains etched in the annals of the Armed Forces as a symbol of courage and principled leadership.
He noted that beyond his Military credentials, Taiwo’s tenure as Governor was defined by administrative clarity and developmental foresight, adding that his contributions to Kwara State outlived his time in office.
Also delivering remarks, the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, represented by Major General Nansak Shagaya, described the late colonel as an officer whose sense of duty was unwavering even in the face of National uncertainty.
According to him, remembering officers like Taiwo is not merely ceremonial but essential to preserving institutional memory and inspiring younger generations within the Armed Forces.
In a deeply personal reflection, Major General Ahmed Taiwo (retd) said the anniversary was both a moment of pride and sober remembrance for the family. He described his father as disciplined yet compassionate, firm yet fair, stressing that the values he stood for continue to guide the Taiwo lineage.
“For us, this is more than a historical date. It is a reminder of sacrifice, integrity and service above self,” he said.
The ceremony concluded with prayers and renewed calls for national unity, as speakers emphasised the importance of honouring past heroes whose sacrifices helped shape Nigeria’s democratic and Military evolution.
